GQ Men of the Year Obama

GQis perhaps the most powerful men’s fashion magazine, so when their West Coast Editor Chris Huvane threw this year’s Men of The Year Party, many of Hollywood’s elite came out to celebrate. Chris hosted the party at the infamous Chateau Marmont, talented men honored on the cover issues included Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, and Michael Phelps. When the men arrived, they did their red carpet duties and were swept in the hotel’s outdoor garden area. Sadly Obama could not make it, but the rest of the cover stars were present. Other guests included; Aaron Eckhart, Outkast’s ever fashionable Big Boi, Brian Austin Green, Elisha Cuthbert, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Jason Statham, Jerry Ferrara, Jon Hamm, Jimmy Kimmel, Kevin Connolly, Matthew Fox, Megan Fox, Olivia Wilde, Rashida Jones, Rosario Dawson, Sarah Silverman, and Zac Efron.  We spent the evening with Executive Editor Adam Rappaport who introduced us to a great T- Shirt company, Bassinger, that he swears by, check out the photo below, he shared to Style Seen Daily that it’s the best shirt you could give a guy.

Along with us that night was also hotelier Jason Pomeranc of Thompson Hotels and James Grant, co-founder of Starworks. Men were decked out in Dolce & Gabana, Tom Ford, Prada, Gucci and even some. This is the one night then men really outshine the ladies.
Our dear friend, Degen Pener, Editor in Chief of Angeleno Magazine, was enjoying the evening and talking politics with fellow party goers. We caught up with him and insisted he pose for a photo with us, he did not mention who he was wearing, but we do know that his light blue button down and dark blue blazer really brought out his bright blue eyes!

Guests enjoyed cocktails and tray passed Chateau specials like Macaroni Balls, but at the end of the night, as we waited for our cars at the valet, a big In-n-Out burger truck passed out delicious food to everyone!

Macy’s Inc. swung to a loss in its fiscal third quarter as sales dropped more than 7%, with the retailer saying the holiday season would be a nail-biter and it saw no benefit in being optimistic for next year.

The department store operator also said Wednesday that it slashed its budget for 2009 capital expenditures by almost half as it navigated the deteriorating economy. Macy’s reiterated its profit outlook for the year but said it would be at the low end of the range if current sales trends continued.
As for the upcoming holiday season, “it will be a nail-biter,” Chief Financial Officer Karen Hoguet told analysts in a conference call. She also noted that Macy’s planned to have inventories for spring and fall 2009 below last year’s levels, saying, “We don’t see an upside in being optimistic.”

Macy’s said it lost $44 million, or 10 cents a share, in the quarter ended Nov. 1, after a profit of $33 million, or 8 cents, a year earlier. Excluding costs related to the consolidation of three regional divisions that totaled $16 million — $10 million after tax or 2 cents a share — the loss was 8 cents a share.

Sales fell to $5.49 billion; analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters were expecting, on average, a loss of 19 cents a share on $5.49 billion in sales.
Shares of Cincinnati-based Macy’s fell $1.04, or 11.1%, to $8.37 after the earnings news.

Reporting from Greenwich, Conn. — Women’s retailer Charlotte Russe Holding Inc. received a takeover offer from a shareholder in a deal valued at nearly $200 million.

The company’s shares jumped $1.26 to $8.15.
KarpReilly Capital Partners and H.I.G. Capital said in a statement that they had offered $9 to $9.50 a share, or $188.1 million to $198.6 million, based on 20.9 million shares outstanding. The offer represents a premium of 31% to 38% to Tuesday’s close of $6.89.

KarpReilly said it owns a 5.4% stake in San Diego-based Charlotte Russe. The investment firm said it originally approached the retailer about a potential deal almost a year ago, but it was rebuffed by the company’s board.

“We believe that we and H.I.G. can offer Charlotte Russe stockholders superior value to what they can realistically expect to receive remaining as stockholders of the current public company,” said Allan Karp, a partner at KarpReilly.
A Charlotte Russe representative could not immediately be reached for comment.

Reporting from New York — American Apparel Inc. responded Wednesday to a former employee’s wrongful-termination lawsuit — the latest legal trouble for the seller of trendy cotton clothing.

Roberto Hernandez sued the Los Angeles company and its chief executive, Dov Charney, in Los Angeles County Superior Court last week. The lawsuit alleges he was fired a week after he refused to pad the company’s balance sheet to make the company more attractive to potential investors.

“The allegations in this lawsuit are fictional, which the company believes represents a cynical attempt to extract phony leverage by Mr. Hernandez’s counsel, Keith Fink, who has been engaged with the company in other litigation for over three years,” the company argued in its statement.

Fink also represents a client in a separate sexual harassment lawsuit, one of several that have been filed against the company.

The apparel retailer said Hernandez was fired for legitimate reasons.

“The best they can come up with was ‘legitimate reasons,’ ” Fink said. “I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist — is it tardiness, is it insubordination — if they had a single reason, they would’ve told you that.”

On Tuesday, the company reported that its third-quarter profit fell 61% as it spent $13.2 million on stock-based compensation, but it reaffirmed its full-year profit estimate. Revenue rose 45%, and sales in stores open at least one year rose 24%.

NIWOT, Colo.

Crocs Inc. said Wednesday it swung to a third-quarter loss of nearly $148 million as sales of the company’s colorful plastic clogs plunged by nearly one-third amid a deteriorating U.S. economy and retail environment.

The loss included one-time charges of $104 million reflecting the declining value of the shoe maker’s business, and Crocs issued a fourth-quarter financial forecast far below Wall Street expectations.

Crocs reported a net loss of nearly $148 million, or $1.79 per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with net income of $56.5 million, or 66 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue dropped 32 percent to $174.2 million from $256.3 million. The latest quarter’s revenue fell far short of the forecast of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters, who had expected $201.7 million, on average.

Crocs recorded a $70 million charge in the latest quarter from writing down the value of inventory and expected losses on inventory purchase commitments. The Niwot, Colo.-based company took an asset impairment charge of $36.1 million that included a write-off of excess equipment and tooling. Crocs recorded a $2.5 million restructuring charge from the closure of Canadian manufacturing and distribution operations.

The company also reported a loss of about $14.6 million from unfavorable currency exchange rates, and increased its provision for returns and allowances by $19.5 million from a year earlier.

“Our performance was below expectations and continued to be impacted by the extremely challenging retail environments in the U.S. and Europe during the third quarter,” said Ron Snyder, president and chief executive. “Based on current trends we have lowered our projected sales volumes and made the strategic decision to further right-size our operations to better align with our lower volumes and revenues.”

Citing the weak economy, Snyder said Crocs plans to reduce capital expenditures by about 50 percent next year compared with 2008.

Crocs reported quarterly results after its shares fell 25 cents, or nearly 12 percent, to $1.90 during the regular session. Its shares are down sharply from a 52-week high of $46.80 reached in December.

Hollywood Domino

Hollywood Domino is the original table game created in Hollywood and played by the stars. The classic game of dominos was given a new twist when A-listers such as Demi Moore, Penelope Cruz, and Charlize Theron began playing dominos with their own “house rules”, creating Hollywood Domino.  February 2008 saw the first Hollywood Domino tournament in Los Angeles, where Charlize Theron was crowned domino champion.

Manning told Style Seen Daily, “It’s a throwback to the free love and flower child era with elements that make the line look and feel relevant,” adding, “Old meets new, clothes are like a blank canvas where it’s up to you to complete your look and personalize it in any way you desire – cut, add, accessorize, layer, etc.”

Manning and her best friend Tara Jane are the talent behind Born Uniqorn, a fashion line the two had been dreaming about since junior high.

“Our line is a reflection of the times, conjuring up individuality as we are facing a new election and dealing with war,” Manning said.  “Born Uniqorn is all about Being Unique, B.U.”

Tara Jane adds, “It’s a blend between whimsical hippie mixed with funky street edge.”

The 70’s vibe of the clothing line, along with the open bar, set the stage for the roughly 150 party attendees.  Everyone was in good spirits, talking to each other, posing for pictures and dancing to Boomkat.

MTV was filming for its docu-reality program Made, where one high school boy with zero fashion taste was getting schooled to fix the problem.  British Vogue also covered the event.

Manning is a critically acclaimed actress best known for her role as “Nola” in Paramount Picture’s Hustle & Flow and the lead singer/songwriter of Boomkat.  Her longtime BFF, Tara Jane, is a Hollywood tastemaker who spent several years as a top promoter alongside Brent Bolthouse.

The Queen of Pop has always reinvented herself, making designers like Jean Paul Gautier, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana quickly grow to worship not only her talent, but her ability to make their clothing world famous. Since the late 80′s, Madonna’s fashion style, along with her music talent and controversial ways, has been a popular subject in media. For nearly two decades she has set trends and on October 18th, Dolce & Gabana along with the Cinema Society and Madonna herself hosted the premiere of her directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, at Landmark’s Sunshine Cinema in New York City.

Following the premiere, Madonna and her guests headed over to Jason Pomeranc’s newest hotel, the Thompson LES (lower east side), where Madonna christened the hotel and restaurant SHANG with its very first event.

Madonna’s choice to launch her film in the East Village was simply because, as she honestly put it, “it is where my struggle began.”

Her gritty film had guests talking. “It’s an honest reality about human beings,” one guest said.

Madonna, who was wearing a black Dolce & Gabana blouse with a see thru skirt, told reporters: “There is a little bit of me in every character.”

Actress Vicky Mclure’s character helps children in Africa. Eugene Hutz’s character is as aspiring pop star who pays the bills by performing S&M acts. Actress Holly Weston plays a graceful ballet dancer who transforms into a stripper. Weston chimed into editors at the party that Madonna “knew exactly what she wanted andwas actually on set before all of us daily.”

The pop star spent most of the evening with her friend/partner Guy Oseary and uber agent, Jason Weinberg, who made for gracious dates.

Guests at the party included a range of star talent and fashion icons like Brooke Shields, Naomi Watts, Ed Westwick, Diane Kruger, Josh Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, Marc Jacobs, David Blaine, Jeremy Piven, Jessica Alba, and Malin Akerman — all dressed of course in Dolce.

Akerman dotted over Madonna and declared “after her Blond Ambition Tour, I wanted to be just like her.”  Jean-Paul Gaultier designed the costumes for that tour, including the now-infamous cone brassiere.

The Recording Industry Association of America ranks Madonna as the best-selling female rock artist of the twentieth century.  Guinness World Records list her as the world’s most successful female recording artist of all time and the top-earning female singer in the world with an estimated net worth of $490 million, having sold more than 200 million records worldwide. On March 10, 2008, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
