LONDON —  A rare blue diamond handed down through generations of German royalty sold for a record-breaking $24.3 million at auction Wednesday in London, Christie’s said.

The Wittelsbach Diamond, a 35.56 carat cushion-shaped gem, has often had its color and clarity compared to the famed Hope Diamond, now on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

The rare gem was snapped up by billionaire diamond-dealer Laurence Graff for about $24.3 million, including buyer’s premium, Christie’s spokeswoman Alexandra Kindermann said.

Kindermann said the price — nearly double its pre-sale estimate — was the most ever paid for a diamond at auction, beating the $16.5 million commanded by a 100-carat diamond at a Swiss auction in 1995.

Christie’s said the diamond was purchased by King Philip IV of Spain in 1664 and included in the dowry for his teenage daughter, the Infanta Margarita Teresa. Although she died relatively young, the diamond remained with her husband, Leopold I of Austria, and passed through a succession of heirs.

The gem got the Wittelsbach name after 1722, when Leopold’s granddaughter married Charles of Bavaria, a member of the Wittelsbach family.

“Der Blaue Wittelsbacher,” as it was then known, made its way through a succession of Bavarian rulers — Maximilian IV Joseph von Wittelsbach, Bavaria’s first king, included the diamond in his royal crown. The diamond made its last state appearance in 1918 in the aftermath of World War I. It was offered for auction in 1931, but failed to sell and vanished from the public eye.

“What happened to it after 1931 is a little mysterious — there’s been lots of speculation,” Christie’s spokeswoman Hannah Schmidt said. “But what exactly happened is unknown.”

The diamond only resurfaced in 1962, when a jeweler recognized its significance and refused a request to re-cut it.

Auctioneer Francois Curiel said Christie’s was thrilled to reach “an historic price for an historic diamond.”

Colored diamonds often fetch high prices at auction. Christie’s sold a much smaller 13.39-carat blue diamond for $8.9 million in May.

July 19, 2009:  The Carlo Pignatelli Spring/Summer 2010 fashion show just took place in Milan, Italy and we here at Style Seen Daily have posted a few of our favorite looks here for you to check out.

Designer Pignatelli is continuing with the purple color palette we have been seeing a lot of the past year.  So ladies, it’s looking like the royal colors will continue its reign. The flowly material for the women in the royal purple reminds us of a fairy princess while the structured suits for the gentleman allow a perfect balance.  Also popular for men are suits that are not just your basic black but instead gray and shimmery tones which goes perfectly with the purples.

Take a look at some of our favorite pictures from this show…

Trend Alert — Menswear Americana Amour

Outdoorsy, rugged look is one of the main looks shaping menswear as we head further into 2009.  It’s called the vintage Americana trend.  Items include: button down red white and blue plaid shirts, jackets with plaid lining, lumberjack jackets and rugged work boots (that aren’t really for work).  These classic pieces will always be popular (hence the “classic” title) as long as you don’t go overboard and make your look like a costume.  It’s about incorporating certain pieces into your staple wardrobe.  Mix and match to your style.  And since it is “Americana” it would be nice if you actually bought clothes that are made in the USA.

Electronics and appliance stores saw sales increase thanks to Black Friday deals.

For the fifth straight month, retail sales were down in November, a sign that consumer confidence and holiday spending have been hit hard by the economic downturn.

According to a report issued Friday by the U.S. Department of Commerce, retail sales dropped 1.8 percent from October to November. And while the predicted dip was 1.9 percent, November marked the fifth consecutive monthly drop in sales. November 2008 sales, which were $355.7 billion, were 7.4 percent below retail sales for the same month last year.

The report said total sales for the September through November 2008 period were down 4.5 percent from the same time last year. The Commerce Department also revised the sales drop figures from September to October to being down 2.9 percent from being down 2.8 percent.

The hardest hit retail segments were automobiles and gasoline, in which sales were down 25.2 percent and 22 percent, respectively, from November 2007. Retail trade sales were down 2 percent from October and down 8.5 percent below the year before.

Electronics and appliance stores, however, saw sales increase from October to November to $9.23 billion from $8.97 billion, or 2.8 percent growth. The boost in electronics and appliance sales is likely tied to aggressive Black Friday sales and hot consumer electronic products like video game systems, flat-screen televisions, music players and smartphones. And while electronics sales grew month-to-month, year-to-year sales were down 4.7 percent in November compared to the same month a year before, when sales reached $9.68 billion.
