And the Back to School 09 media tour continues…this morning I was in Oregon to do 7 live segments for KOIN, the CBS affiliate for Oregon, Washington and part of Canada.  I focused on fashions for elementary students and tweens.

KOIN reporter Kacey Montoya is a treat to work with and always so much fun!  She liked the fashions I picked out so much she couldn’t resist putting on one of the graphic t-shirts from the Junk Food clothing line… even if it was from GAP Kids!  Hey, it looked great on her so why not!?!  The bright blue shirt had a picture of Smurfet with the words “most popular” on it.

We shot the fashion segments live at Washington Square. We have put together a back to school fashions and gift ideas detailed tip sheet for elementary students on the official Washington Square site.  Click here to be directed to it.

Retailers featured in these KOIN segments:  XXI Forever, Zumiez, Vans, Pottery Barn Kids, GAP Kids, and Narrtjie.

Also, some more tips I picked up while researching this fashion segment…

Back to School Shopping Guide

For tween boys:

  • Animal graphic t-s are flying off the shelves —  dinos, raccoons and pandas are very popular.
  • Dark denim skinny jeans.

For tween girls:

  • Leather jacket is a must.
  • Also skinny jeans are very popular.

For young boys:

  • They are really loving graphic t shirts with transformers and superman pictures.
  • Also, a throwback to the pac man era, pac man logos on watches and lunch boxes are very fun.

For young girls:

  • Bright colors and lots of polk a dots and stripes!  The more the better.

Native Angeleno Danny Roberts began drawing when he was just a little boy, he has been said to draw for 15 hours at a time, hands swelling so bad he had to stop.  The hardwork paid off when at just 13 years old, he and a friend began their own clothing company which they would run till he went to Cal Poly for Photography and then eventually the Fashion Design school at the Academy of Art in San Francisco.  In 2007 he was honored by being awarded as the first featured portfolio of graduates o the WGSN Generation Now website.  Inspired by the Chanel 2007 runway show, Danny created the T-Shirt shown above, which is available for purchase on his website: igorandandre.blogspot.com/ and has become a favorite with the fashionista’s from New York to Los Angeles.

Working with many different forms of art from music, to sketching, painting and fashion, Danny has collaborated with various arts such as Sophie Ward and the band Eisley.  Recently he sketched a drawing of a series of buildings and then Heutchy, the men’s shoe line, collaborated with him to make a fabric print out of the building top texture.

Finding inspiration from fashion magazines, models and designers alike, Danny also re-created French & American Vogue Magazine covers of subjects he felt interesting, including Sophia Coppola and Lydia Hearst.

Danny is making a name for himself across the globe and is surely someone that we’ll be paying close attention to. Its always exciting for a local artist to make national and international fans, we’re hoping soon more designers will hire Danny to create works out art that we can not only hang on our walls, but wear on our bodies.
