November, 2010

The new fashion momentum is bringing back old-world glamour and reintroducing pearls as fresh go-to accessories and embellishments for the season.  Pearls may have temporarily gotten a bad rap for being the costume jewelry of your frumpy Aunt, or it may conjure images of beaded puff-sleeved wedding gowns from three decades ago — but these aren’t those pearls.

Your favorite retailers, your celebrity style gurus, clothing and jewelry designers everywhere have taken notice of this time defying trend and are piling them on — adorning cardigans, pairing them with metallic chains and ribbons in rich necklaces, and topping off chunky cocktail rings.  Pearls are the quintessential accessory for fall and winter — you want them.

Here’s a peek at the top three ways we like to wear them:

Cultured Couture

We snagged this one from Metropark at The Oaks ($20.30).

Pearl necklaces are traditional, sure, but have gotten a makeover for a little twist.  Look for tiers of mixed mediums—edgy chains, whimsical ribbons and glittering beads offset the refined sass of perfect pearls.  Top off any look—night or day—with this versatile piece for an instant style update.  We snagged this one from Metropark at The Oaks ($20.30).

Pearls of Wisdom

Macy’s at Lakewood Center ($38).

We can learn a thing or two about style from those trend-setters of yesteryear.   Pearls have long been lauded as lust-worthy—and now we’re seeing them from inventive new angles.  We’re positively purring about the latest pearl-studded tops and sweaters—choose a blast from the 80s past, like this scoop neck sweater tunic we saw at Macy’s at Lakewood Center ($ 38) or curl up in a pearl adorned cardigan for a sweet and tidy take on the look.

Pearly Mates

New York & Company at The Shops at Montebello ($16.95).

Get attached to a signature pearl accessory with a little weight to it.  Look for clustered pearl and gem cocktail rings, or a pearl-laden cuff bracelets and call attention to a trend-forward statement piece for the season.   You can find these fun holiday looks at every price point — we love this one from New York & Company at The Shops at Montebello ($16.95).

As the cold season approaches, fashionistas are on the hunt for new captivating items to compliment their already stellar wardrobes. Short Shearling

Anne Hathaway in shearling. Photo by Danny Martindale/ filmmagic.

Love and Other Drugs actress Anne Hathaway sports this winter’s hottest trend, the shearling coat, and it looks great because she is has that casual cool style. We love how she mixed and matched with a flowy mini, floral top, and the trendy hat, she ties together her look with the warm and cozy coat.  The short shearling is perfect to pair with jeans and boots or over an LBD for a warm casual look.

Forever 21 makes this  Suedette Shearling, priced at $28, that incorporates Anne’s style without that movie star price.

Military

Hathaway’s Bride Wars co-star Kate Hudson took a stroll in chilly New York City with her beau, Muse front man Matthew Bellamy, in a Military style red coat.  This coat has a retro look, it is structured and has those gold buttons that oppose the red color well. Wool coats are a must-have for winter, so why we here at SSD advise you to stand out when walking and own the street like Kate.

Guess Military Coat. Macys.com

Be bold in bright outerwear this season like the gorgeous mother of two in Guess’ red military jacket, priced at $139. The metal buttons accent the rich red color, and the coat could serve as your everyday warmth or your night-on-the-town overcoat.

Cape

Kourtney and Kim Kardashian. Photo by Splash News Online.

The Kardashian sisters are always ahead of the trends, so you know while opening up her new Dash location in Soho, Kourtney would be spotted in the newest coat design while keeping warm in NYC.  We love that capes have that old fashioned, 19th century look, which you rarely see these days and it can easily be incorporated into a modern wardrobe. Kourtney shows off her classic side in this cape after getting a pedicure with her sister Kim.

Forever 21 Plaid Woven Cape. Forever21.com.

Try this plaid cape from Forever 21, $32.80, it is stylish and flirty, but will still keep you warm on those crisp winter days.

L.A.M.B designer and pop-rock sensation Gwen Stefani finds time in her busy schedule to play with two-year-old son Zuma and still look super stylish. This plaid coat from her own fashion line is $400 and it is stunning.  Plaid is a great pattern for the cold months, it adds some dynamic to the typical solid black or brown outfits, so dont be afraid to go bold like Gwen.

Mossimo Cropped Wool Coat. Target.com.

Target’s Mossimo brand makes this short plaid coat for $35. Pair this jacket with some lace or bright solid colors and you can have that punk-rock fashionable look like the No Doubt singer.

Look super chic while keeping warm like Anne, Kate, and Kourtney without breaking the bank.

Fall Must-Have: Camel Coat

Mix Of Fall 2010 Trends, Including Military Styles and Chunky Sweaters.

Fall is right around the corner and the latest trends for the season are making the migration into fashion forward wardrobes everywhere. From military styles to camel and grey pieces, a new fresh twist on fall fashions are being spotted around the country.  We here at Style Seen Daily have picked out five hot trends to help you transition into the upcoming season.

Fall into Autumn Right With These Five Hot Style Seen Daily Trend Picks

Rihanna seen rocking fall fashion must have; over-the-knee boots.

#1 Get a Leg up With Over The Knee Boots

Over-the-knee boots are returning as a trend for this upcoming season. They made their popular debut last fall, but they have come back with a fun new flare. Lots of zippers can be seen on these sky-high boots. Skinny jeans or jeggings make a great compliment to the boots for a polished look. Many celebrities ranging from Rihanna to Kate Hudson have been seen sporting this hot trend with boots from Jimmy Choo and Stuart Weitzman just to name a few.

Jessica Alba wearing a saddlebag while out for the day with her daughter, Honor.

#2  Saddle up!

The trend in handbags for this season is the saddlebag.  Look for saddlebags ranging in richer, deeper shades of leather such as camel and burgundy. The size of the actual bag van vary, from the teeniest of bags, big enough for only a lipstick and wallet to larger bags that can hold enough for a quick weekend getaway.  Many celebrities like Jessica Alba, Kourtney Kardashian and Katie Holmes have been spotted using a saddle bag to tote around their personal items.

Camel jacket from a DKNY runway show for Fall 2010.

#3   The “it” color:  Camel

Not only is camel seen as a popular color for saddlebags but it has also been popping up in fashion as a hot fall trend. Camel has become the new black. Camel outfits from head to toe are incredibly popular as the season changes. Many shades of the color have been seen in higher end boutiques and regular merchandise stores alike, making it easy to mix and match pieces in order to create the perfect look.

Lauren Conrad recently spotted wearing trendy deep navy nail polish.

#4   Metallic Blue and Gold For Nails

On the beauty end of things, nail polish trends are changing with the season. As we move from summer to fall the trend in nail colors tends to get a little darker as well. Deeper, darker hues of colors have been popping up on celebrity fingers recently. Red wine colored polish is always a staple in any fall wardrobe. Some more playful colors are also top trends this season, like metallic blue and gold. Lauren Conrad is always a nail trend follower, recently spotted wearing a metallic navy blue on her fingers.

Rachel Zoe sporting the hottest trend in hair right now; chunky waves.

#5 Wavy Hair Trend Continues Past Summer

Chunky mermaid waves continue to rule in hair trends even though the summer is ending. Charlie’s Angels hair styles match well with any of the boho chic looks that we have been seeing pop up on fashion followers everywhere. This style does translate well with more classic looks as well, helping to make even the most simple outfit look more put together. Celebrities like Rachel Zoe and The Kardashian Sisters are infamously known for their love of the long wavy look.

Winter seems to always sneak up on us  –  is your closet stocked with this season’s on-trend necessities? With so many stylish trends and looks to choose from, the task of narrowing down what to buy and what to pass on by can be daunting.

Want to know what will be in our closet this year?  We’ve pared the season’s trends down to our top five faves to give you a lust-worthy, and essential, list to shop from.  Included in this Style Seen Daily trend report:  Faux fur, leopard, gold, over the knee boots, and red lips.

#1 THE MUST-HAVE ACCESSORY:  Faux Fur

Model Iwona Lis in outfit provided by Los Cerritos Center. Foreign Exchange Faux fur vest: $44.

It’s a fur thing, and a sure thing—this holiday you can’t go wrong with decking out in faux fur.  Gain some instant style cred when you choose fur-trimmed boots, handbags or jackets.  We’ve taken note of the way this trend is spreading like wildfire with celebrities — Kim Kardashian likes to layer on her blonde faux vest when traveling, and Olivia Palmero broke out her faux vest early in chilly NYC — a sleek black version she layered over black skinnys and a dark sweater.   Don’t think California is exempt from this cozy look—as the weather cools here in L.A. we’ll see even more of this hot look around town.

Can’t decide which fur is fur you?

While shopping for our favorite faux-fur, we decided to go with a vest from Foreign Exchange in Los Cerritos Center that looked that it cost much more than it’s affordable sticker price of $44.

Pick a blend and style that fits your personality—are you wild and wooly with an edge?  Pick a longer haired multi-hued vest.  Are you Jackie O’s refined elegance?  Look for shorter haired single-tone cropped jackets.

#2 THE MUST-HAVE PRINT:  Leopard

Model Camila Poindexter. Outfit provided by Ann Taylor, Westside Pavilion. Ann Taylor Leopard Skirt: $118.

Here kitty, kitty….this fall, a little leopard makes your look large on style. Don’t try to tame this wild animal, 2010 is the year to feed your inner feline.  Grab that racy printed heel, or cinch that waist with a touch of cat-like couture—and know you’re not alone.  This fall we’ve seen Angelina Jolie is wrapping up in a stealth leopard trench, Victoria Beckham’s been carrying her kitty on her arm in a chain-strapped handbag, and Keira Knightly tied on a purr-fect printed scarf.

We spotted some decadent leopard looks at Ann Taylor at Westside Pavilion (model is wearing a-line leopard skirt, Ann Taylor, Westside Pavilion, $118).

Pick a lady-like pencil skirt, pumps or cute cardigan, or step out in a printed sheath, or ballet flats—just call a cat a cat, and say that leopard is topping your list for winter.

#3 THE MUST-HAVE COLOR:  Gold

Model Ashley Jeuong. Outfit provided by Love Culture, Santa Monica Place. Love Culture Gold tube dress $19.

The old adage is being redefined—all that glitters is gold this season.  Get your glitz-fix this holiday with this old-school glamour inducing metallic.  Start with jewelry, yes, but then get creative and look to lamé for new inspiration.  Gold-plated blazers, skirts, handbags and headbands are ruling the runways this winter, with glinting new takes on trend-forward pieces.

We recently caught Heidi Klum donning a sequined golden stunner during Milan Fashion Week, and Hilary Swank looking ravishing in bustier version at the London Film Festival.

When we hit the aisles and took a quick peek inside Love Culture at the new Santa Monica Place, we fell in love with their collection of gold tops and accessories.  Our faves that tipped the scales–everything from sequined tunics to gold and rhinestoned cuff bracelets, all for $20 and under.

#4  THE MUST-HAVE BOOT: Over-The-Knee

Model Michelle Marie. Dress provided by Foreign Exchange, Santa Monica Place. ALDO boots, Westside Pavilion, $130.

Over-the-knee boots are so fashion-forward they may make you question your style identity — “is over-the-knee for me?”  The answer is yes—the brave, the bashful and somewhere in between–even you can wear them.  So buck up, skivvy into some skinnys and get to shopping, because these boots aren’t optional.  Get right in a longer riding-boot flat version, or saddle up to sexy suede stilettos, but don’t dare to say that model Claudia Schiffer, and “Gossip Girl” star Taylor Momsen, don’t know where it’s at—they both started the fall wearing boots up to there with boldness.

ALDO in Westside Pavilion is our favorite haunt these days for these leg elongating lookers, (model is wearing knee high leather boots, Aldo, Westside Pavilion, $130).

Aldo carries knee high boots with prices ranging from $60 – $250 and when paired with tights and dresses, leggings and chunky sweaters, or your favorite slimming denim, will raise the roof.

#5 THE MUST-HAVE LIPS:  Red

Style Seen Daily Founder Crystal Fambrini.

Finally—what’s the accessory that compliments everything else you’ll buy this season?  Your sassy, bright red lips.  Pucker up and find the shade that lights up your complexion, and complements your hair and eye color.  If you have pink undertones to your skin, pick rowdy raspberry inspired reds, or blue-based plums.  If your skin is any shade of olive, choose brazen brown-reds or bubbly poppy hues.

If color matching makes you cringe, take a trip over to M.A.C at Westside Pavilion and ask one of their color experts to choose a true red for you.  This universally flattering neutral red is easy to fall for—it looks great on every face.  M.A.C’s color-rich lipsticks are $14.50 each.

Catch the colbalt craze this fall and pick up a few pieces in a sultry blue hue.   There’s only so much black any one person can own — make blue your signature color this season and let it be known that your style is outside of the box.  Look for vibrant, traditional blues — turquoise was the color for spring and summer, the cooler weather points towards an icy, royal version.  Navy is close, but still a bit subdued — keep looking until you find that brilliant bright blue that makes your eyes pop and your skin glow.  You’ll know the one.  Here’s three of our top picks to get you started:

Blue’s the New You

New Poppy Ski Bunny Glam Tote in Blue Ice $258.

It’s a little sassier than your norm, and you’re gonna like it.  Start small and snag a quilted tote for the winter—it won’t be long before you’re warmed up and ready to rock it like the rest of ‘em.  This ultra-chic version is from Coach at Los Cerritos Center ($258).

Better in Blue

We found this sweater at J. Crew at The Oaks ($69.99).

When the color is right—you don’t need to embellish your look.  Find a simple piece, like a comfy cashmere cardigan, and let the vibrant hue do the work—pair it with easy skinny denim and neutral gray or brown over-the-knee boots for an unfussy, fabulous look.  We found this sweater at J. Crew at The Oaks ($69.99).

True Blue

This little blue dress is from Cache at Los Cerritos Center ($148).

Baby, I DO love you.  Deck your holidays with a body skimming satin halter dress in this unforgettable color.  This little blue dress is from Cache at Los Cerritos Center ($148).  Pair it with some glittering accessories and get ready to sparkle.

Nicole Richie is all-smiles on the Red Carpet.

She’s a celebrity, has two babies, has a rock star as a significant other and a famous Dad… She’s Nicole Richie. Now, once again, there’s a possibility that she’ll be heading to a TV set near you. This time, not in something reality-based. Nicole is working closely with writers and producers to get a TV show about her off the ground. The deal, inked with ABC as a potential host, has been in the workings for some time, including a first try which didn’t go over so well earlier this year.

This specific series will follow Nicole, playing herself, as she navigates through the world of being a celebrity mom in Hollywood and juggling her career with raising a family. Not exactly a stretch for the star who, in addition to acting, also runs a successful clothing line called House of Harlow.

No specific details on the show have emerged besides the basic plot point, except the fact that Jeff Rake is on board. Rake is a writer who helped pen some witty dialogue for Alicia Silverstone, when she made a venture to TV in Miss Match. Considering that show lacked viewers, but was praised by critics, here’s to hoping Richie has a great team behind her.

No stranger to the small screen, Richie was able to flex her acting muscles in a fun turn on Chuck. While guest-starring on the series, she was able to mix some action with some comedy and came out on top. If the series fails, I’m positive she’ll have something to fall back on. Possibly one of her other ventures… writing… perfume… jewelry…

"Somewhere" film producer Sophia Coppola with co-stars Elle Fanning & Stephen Dorff

Labor Day weekend is a big deal in Italy, its time for the 67th Annual Venice Film Festival and this year we were blown away by one independent film premiering there, “Somewhere” by Sophia Coppola.  Not only does she look incredible in her Louis Vuitton dress and shoes, but her film is the most talked about and liked picture of the festival.  Elle Fanning, younger sister to actress Dakota Fanning, makes a precious performance in the film and on the carpet, stood out in her Marc Jacobs gown, the dress is a perfect choice for a young girl.

"Somewhere" filmed at the Chateau Marmont Hollywood.

“Somewhere” also marks an exciting new phase in the real life career of actor Stephen Dorff, who originally made his mark in the film world playing Deacon Frost in many guys favorite film “Blade“, despite having been a successful actor for ten years by that time, including the film released one year before “Blood & Wine” where he co-starred with Jack Nicholson.

Stephen Dorff in Blade

Last year we saw Stephen alongside of Johnny Depp in “Public Enemies” playing a bad boy robber, but “Somewhere” shows a side of the actor that has gone unseen till now, he plays Johnny Marco – a young successful actor who lives at SSD’s real life favorite Hollywood spot The Chateau Marmont Hotel,  the Sunset Boulevard icon of Hollywood often known for excess and impermanence.

Stephen Dorff on the set of "Somewhere" at The Chateau Marmont.

Every vice is easily available to Johnny: parties, women, sex, booze, drugs, fame, but he is always dissatisfied. Sudden change comes in the form of his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning), who comes to stay with him after his ex-wife (Michelle Monaghan) leaves her at his doorstep.

“I think the movie is about his becoming a man,” Dorff said at the press conference at the festival.  “A lot of characters I’m interested in are at a transition in life,” Coppola said. “Elle’s character is something real in a world not based on real things.” She said. “When I was first writing the script, Stephen came to mind.”  Dorff praised Coppola and described making the film as “one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had. It made me really sad when it ended.” Dorff went on to add, “The one thing I found very realistic … there is an isolation that happens to an actor when a film is finished, for film actors, we work together three months, then the movie ends. I don’t go to an office every day. I am kind of left with not knowing what I am going to do, until the next movie arrives.”

Coppola said she wanted to do “a portrait of today’s L.A.” and the idea for the movie took shape while she was living in France after finishing “Marie Antoinette,” her last film, and viewing Los Angeles from a distance through the pages of tabloids brought by visiting friends.  The 39-year-old director gives a fresh and often wry twist to the excesses of showbiz fame.  We believe this is exactly the type of role that will bring Stephen Dorff the accolades he deserves and the insight to know not to let it all go to his head.

Stephen Dorff & Sophia Coppola at the "Somewhere" press conference in Venice.

Coppola said she got her inspiration for the story from growing up with her father, director Francis Ford Coppola, who serves as one of the film’s executive producers. “I spent a lot of time living in hotels while on location with my dad,” she recalled. “They are an impermanent place filled with characters in transition.

”We hope “Somewhere” wins The Golden Lion – the award all Venice Festival Particpiants hope to get – and is announced September 11th this year. And we are cheering Stephen on as his career takes on a new style. Watch for him in the upcoming movies; “Born to Be A Star”, Adam Sandler‘s comedy with Don Johnson and Christina Ricci as well as “Immortals” a Greek titan film where he was cast along side of Mickey Rouke, Kellan Lutz, Frida Pinto, and Isabel Lucas.
