Yoga Like The Stars

Ashtanga yoga is said to transform your body and mind, making you stronger and more flexible while also reducing stress and making you calmer and more focused. Ashtanga combines breathing and movement into a series of postures that is cardiovascular, meditative and that relies on the strength of your own body to perform the movements.  The postures performed are the same and they are done in a specific order — concentration, focus and breathing are key.

Ashtanga yoga is meant to purify the body by cultivating an internal heat, or tapas, which allows toxins to burn off as the postures are practiced.  This practice is thousands of years old and popular western yoga, like power yoga or vinyasa yoga, is derived from ashtanga.

Many celebrities swear by ashtanga yoga, helping to make this practice more recognized and popular. I appeared on San Diego Living to highlight the ashtanga studio Jois Encinitas.  Watch the segment here:

Madonna practices ashtanga yoga every day. Her routine lasts an hour and a half (at least), and practice is fast-paced, sweaty, strict, and challenging. One of Madonna’s songs ”Shanti/Ashtangi” from her Ray of Light album features the ashtanga yoga mantra that is traditionally chanted before class.

Celebrities who practice ashtanga yoga.

Jennifer Aniston practices yoga on set and even gave Oprah a yoga mat.

Sting and his wife have practiced yoga for more than 30 years. “Like music, yoga is a journey — one that is long enough so you keep developing, and keep learning. I don’t see an end to it,” said Sting.

Supermodels Alessandra Ambrosso, Gisele Bundchen and Miranda Kerr credit yoga to helping them lose the extra post-baby weight.

Adam Levine says yoga has carved him into a different person as well as defined his muscles.

Pattabhi Jois is the recognized guru of Ashtanga yoga and took the practice to Encinitas, California in 1975.  Encinitas is the American birthplace of this sacred yoga. For the past thirty years, yoga practitioners from all over the world have traveled to Pattabhi Jois’ home in Mysore, India to learn the Ashtanga from him, his daughter and grandson.  Pattabhi pased away in 2011, leaving his family to carry on the practice.  The family makes special trips to Jois Encinitas to teach Ashtunga.
