Tony Duran Proves Photography Is Still An Art

Beyonce by Tony Duran

Tony Duran is a widely published, revered photographer known for his photos of celebrities and male models, his work has been said to express “unrivaled artistic vision.” Duran was born in the midwest, Minnesota to be exact (which we love) and attended the University of Wisconsin where he majored in art, creating quite a following from his early photography of female students there, which lead him to win the “Look of the Year Award.”

Beyonce by Tony Duran (in Flaunt)

In this month’s issue of Flaunt Magazine, Tony’s photograph of Beyonce graces the cover, and many pages inside, as usual his art does not disappoint, reminding us that despite this age of digital cameras, iPhones, Instagram, Photography is still an ART and the best artists make the most beautiful work. His images prove time and time again that photography is not dead, its very much alive and he pushes the standards by which many artists live by.

Jennifer Lopez by Tony Duran

Following school he went to Sydney, Australia and developed a strong base of contacts in the editorial world – it helped that he was a very kind, interesting and fun guy. His big break into the Hollywood and Fashion scene came when he shot Jennifer Lopez for the cover of Glamour Magazine, always humble and grateful, his home has a plaque in JLo’s honor that reads, “This is the house that J.Lo built.”

Despite lack of formal training as a photographer, his work has been published by many magazines including; Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, GQ, Glamour, Esquire and Elle, proving passion and creativity can still create a career for you. He also has worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment world including; Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Ashton Kutcher, Alicia Keys, Orlando Bloom, Tom Cruise, Sandra Bullock, Scarlett Johansson, Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, Kate Beckinsale, Katie Holmes, Jude Law, Ben Affleck, Kevin Spacey, Britney Spears and Jamie Foxx. Tony is also responsible for one of my favorite shoe campaigns for the amazing Brian Atwood, part of the reason that New York City declared them “too racy for the taxi’s” and banned the ads!

Duran has done hundreds of nude and semi-nude photography, but always creating a very artistic style for the works, he is known for using unique and strange imagery, props and fine art.  He was once quoted about his methodology saying, “I treat each subject with the same approach, be it models or actors, or a person off the street. People just want to look more beautiful and sexy than they did when they walked in the door. It is all a fantasy, a fantasy that I am more than willing to provide.” Ever inspirational, Duran reminds us to follow our passion, break molds, push boundaries and work fearlessly.
