Read: Shantaram

Gregory David Roberts shares a novel based on his own life, in 1978 he was sentenced to nineteen years imprisonment as punishment for a series of robberies of building-society branches, credit unions, and shops he had committed while addicted to heroin. In 1980 he escaped from a maximum-security prison in broad daylight, becoming one of Australia’s most wanted men for the next ten years. Living mostly in Bombay, he set up a free health clinic in the slums, acted in Bollywood movies, worked for the mafia as a forger, counterfeiter, and smuggler and, as a gun-runner.

Despite his unusual background, Roberts is truly a reminder of what the power of our minds cab really cause, he’s a gifted writer offering vivid characters, adventures, and tales of the nature of good and evil. A man who lost everything, turned his back on his soul, but came out enlightened, able to share with us all.

Hollywood took notice to this thriller when Johnny Depp, Brad Grey and Graham King bought the story, Eric Roth is doing the screenplay with Roberts staying on board as well. Actor Joel Edgerton is attached and Warner Brothers is distributing. No release date is scheduled as they have yet to begin filming.
