School girl, schmool girl—this isn’t your throwback to Britney Spears circa 1998, nor is it a tribute to Red Hot Chili Peppers era Seattle grunge wear; spring is turning up the volume on plaid print, and it’s all new, all now, chic and playful. You can go practical and choice a button-up top and check plaid off your list—but why?? when there are so many new ways to wear it. We’re not kidding when we say—you haven’t seen plaid like this before—but after this we think you’ll want to see more. Here’s the newly minted take on this traditional pattern, as seen from the fresh eyes of spring 2011’s hottest designers:

Edgy squared

Think plaid’s got an overly innocent vibe? Not when it’s studded and striped like this trend-forward, mesh clutch from Lane Bryant at Inland Center ($190). Denounce your girly reputation when you pair this with the season’s muted neutrals during your next table-top for two night out.

Perked up patterns

Revive old looks with new ideas–florals and plaid forge new ground when mixed over spring’s full skirts. Pair with a fitted and tucked-in t and a strappy wedge for a warm weather showstopper. This eye-catching pick is from Anthropologie at The Oaks ($98).

Plaid to be had

We’re all in a twist about swimwear’s sexy take on the plaid one piece this season. From vivaciously bright hues, to this version’s twist on tribal—plaid’s got us percolating for more this spring. We snapped this up from Anthropologie at The Oaks ($298).

Pretty Prints-ess

A little sparkle never hurt anyone—get glamorous in the new metallic plaids. Traditional tartan or a modern fade, a little shine can transform a simple T and your style. Our new favorite top is Burberry from Nordstrom at Los Cerritos Center ($150).

Choose an elongating and sophisticated lace-topped jumpsuit for a notice-me sleek silhouette, like this one from BCBGMAXAZARIA at Westside Pavilion ($248).

As the heat of the summer starts to simmer down—don’t let your look start to lack.  Meet fall head on with those transitional trends that carry you seamlessly from the warmer weather to the cool of winter—and, start with lace.   If your first inclination is to hesitate, let’s talk.  Don’t let this dainty fabric fool you, it’s come a long way since the decorative doily, or the cream colored curtains in your great-aunt’s living room.  Today’s lacey looks are flirty, feminine, sometimes even edgy, but–when done right—always becoming and on-trend.  So keep reading, and let us show you why you too should look to lace.

Party Perfection

When you’re hitting the evening party circuit this year, consider donning something a little spicier than your LBD of season’s past.  Choose an elongating and sophisticated lace-topped jumpsuit for a notice-me sleek silhouette, like this one from BCBGMAXAZARIA at Westside Pavilion ($248).  Or, find a little lace black dress for a new take on an old favorite.

Prim and Pretty

Here’s rust colored dream from Anthropologie at The Oaks ($248).

50s flair is flattering to all, and a nipped and tucked waisted, lace overlay dress slimming and sassy.  Wear it now while the weather’s still hot, or pairit with a cute cardigan to take it into late fall.  Here’s rust colored dream from Anthropologie at The Oaks ($248).

Classic Couture

We found this stunner at Burberry in Santa Monica Place ($1,495).

Pick traditional with a twist—a timeless black trench entrenched in delicate lace is subtle, sexy and oh-so haute.  Jackie O ain’t got nothing on you now.  We found this stunner at Burberry in Santa Monica Place ($1,495).

Fall into Autumn Right With These Five Picks

Fall Must-Have: Camel Coat

Menswear this fall is all about putting a twist on classic looks. Photo Credit: The Fashionables.

Now that fall has arrived, men out there need to update their wardrobes. The military look, which is ever popular this year, as well as plaid and cardigans, which are already favorites of  Usher, Joe Jonas and Pharrell Williams,  all play a large part in fashion for men this fall. Tailored jackets and combat boots, are also big players this season and have already been spotted on celebrities like Will Smith, and Hayden Christensen. Many looks this upcoming season are updates of past trends with a new flair. Here at Style Seen Daily we want to bring you some key trends to look for when sprucing up your cold weather wardrobe.

Tailored Jacket

This Perry Ellis velvet blazer, $150, is a great addition to any man's wardrobe this fall. Photo Credit: Esquire.com.

An essential trend this fall for men is the tailored jacket or blazer, and not just any blazer. A velvet blazer is the jacket of choice this season for men. This luxurious fabric can add just the right amount of dapper to any man’s wardrobe. Though velvet isn’t usually seen in menswear, it can easily be worn over an oxford shirt or paired with a pair of jeans for a well-polished look. The Perry Ellis velvet blazer is a great one to spruce up an outfit during those cool autumn months.

Plaid

Plaid, which always seems to pop up  during cool autumn months, is making a major comeback in menswear this fall. Although plaid is typically seen on items like flannel shirts, this season it is making an appearance in a whole new way on neckties, sweaters, and even computer cases.  Celebrities like Joe Jonas have already been seen going mad for plaid.

The Cardigan

Polish off any look with the BOSS Orange 'Wait' Waffle Knit Cardigan, priced at $195.

Another huge menswear trend this season is the cardigan. Cardigans are such a versatile piece of any wardrobe and come in all sorts of styles that can be worn in many different ways. This fall brands such as, BOSS, have updated the cardigan for men to give it a more  polished look. This classic piece can easily be paired with jeans for a casual look or worn with slacks and carried into the office.

Rapper and Producer Pharrell Williams was spotted in a key item for men's fashion this fall, the cardigan.

Pharrell Williams, spotted in a white cable-knit cardigan, pairs this classic sweater with jeans for a casual, yet sophisticated look.

Military

This military inspired look was one of many that graced the Burberry Prorsum Fall 2010 Runway.

The military look has been seen all over runways for the Fall 2010 season, and menswear is no exception for this key trend. Pieces like aviator jackets and utility pants in an array of greys and blues are essential parts of this trend. This look can easily be dressed up or down and incorporated into many different styles. Pair a sleek military-style jacket with dark jeans and a sweater for an outfit that is simple and nostalgic, yet still masculine.

Singer Usher creates a suave look here by pairing this military style jacket with dark wash jeans.

Men Shoe Must Have:  Combat Boots

No wardrobe is complete without a great shoe and for men this season it’s all about boots. Combat boots and aviator-style utility boots are big for fall. These shoes come in a variety of styles, from military to motorcycle boots, that can match any sense of style. Actor Hayden Christensen was recently spotted in Los Angeles wearing a pair of All Saints military side zip boots that are right on trend.

Bosworth, Bailey & Williams

Christopher Bailey is Chief Creative Director of Burberry, responsible for the brands image including all advertising, corporate art direction, store design of all 100+ retail locations and visuals, as well as design of all product lines and collections.  154 years ago, when Burberry was born, they become famous for making the trenchcoat more fashionable than ever before, and now, after dominating the fashion scene for longer than any of us reading this have been alive, there is a new launch, Burberry Beauty.

Burberry Beauty Products

Bailey, who is credited for transforming Burberry into a billion-dollar global powerhouse, and decided it was time to develop and launch the brands first make up collection.  In celebration of the launch, Baliey traveled to New York, San Francisco, and our home town Los Angeles – where we were fortunate to meet up with him at the former home of Tom Cruise in Bel Air – thanks to our amazing friend Lauryn Flynn, Director of VIP & Music Relations at Burberry.

Burberry Beauty Launch - Tea in Bel Air

Bailey hosted the Brit-inspired tea party in the private garden poolside, and the dining room became a cosmetics counter.  Among the 70 or so guests were May Anderson, Kate Bosworth, Serena Williams, Lake Bell and stylist Rachel Zoe, all of whom enjoyed the beautiful day, listening to music from the likes of Kings of Leon to Sting, munching on petite sandwich’s (crustless of course), sipping on Pim’s cocktails and cucumber water, while sampling Buberry Beauty like Burberry Skin, Glow, Lips and Eyes.

Burberry Beauty Campaign

“Burberry Beauty” includes foundations, blushers, lipsticks and eyeshadows, and its very British palette is inspired by the house’s iconic trench coat. In keeping with its quintessentially English vibe, the ad campaign features British models Lily Donaldson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Nina Porter.

“We’ve chosen three British beauties we’ve worked with before and who are part of the family,” Bailey said. “Rosie has this effortless sexiness to her; Nina has an edge and attitude; and Lily is a classic British beauty. When you put them all together, you have a pure Burberry expression.”

Burberry Beauty Lips, Eyes and Face

The products (priced from $27 for an eyeliner to $55 for a wet-dry foundation) come in metal packaging etched with Burberry check. Foundation shades are based on the earthy shades of the iconic trench. The Light Glow blush, in colors like russet, blossom and cameo, are mostly translucent, and the Lip Glow has a great plumping effect. The Sheer Powder Eye Shadows, in stormy khakis, blues, lavenders and grays, are easy for anyone to use.

Bailey said, “I started to think about  makeup a few years ago, while working on a runway show. where it seemed clear that this concept was the only one that we were missing to fully express a world and state of mind”

The collection is fused with inspiration from the classic Buberry trench coat, locking in that timelessness with innovation and functionality.  The make up line is available exclusivley at Nordstrom and www.burberry.com across the US, Canada and Europe.  We were lucky to leave with an incredible gift bag full of products to take home and packaged in a great clutch by Burberry of course.

Expect to see much more from Burberry, Bailey is building on the brands history with innovation and is reaching out to the next generation, starting now with this beauty line, but also doing an entire social networking site, digital advertising and even a fashion show webcast that let consumers order on the spot.  Burberry’s comeback, that Bailey lead,  just keeps on coming and coming.   With a following like Bailey has and the incredible staff around him, Burberry is sure to continue to surprise us and entice us.

New York – It may have been the American fashion industry’s big night, but international fashion greats also got their due at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards last night at Lincoln Center in New York on Monday, June 7.

The late Alexander McQueen was honored with a special tribute, presented by Sarah Jessica Parker, and his Fall 2010 collection was shown for the first time outside the small Paris presentation in March, where it was originally shown shortly after his death on February 11, 2010.

British designer Christopher Bailey of Burberry also received this year’s “International Award,” presented to him by Donna Karan.

A typically star-studded affair – like the Academy Awards and fashion week wrapped into one event – actors including Jessica Biel, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rachel Weisz and CFDA designers themselves, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, mingled with fashion’s finest, such as CFDA president and designer Diane von Furstenberg, Kenneth Cole, Zac Posen, Betsey Johnson, Rachel Roy, Brian Atwood and Peter Som.

Top honors of the Swarovski-sponsored night went to Marc Jacobs for “Womenswear Designer of the Year,” David Neville and Marcus Wainwright of Rag & Bone for “Menswear Designer of the Year” and the “Accessory Design of the Year” award went to Alexis Bittar.

Swarovski also underwrote the awards for the top emerging designers, who this year included Jason Wu for womenswear, Richard Chai for menswear and Alexander Wang in accessory design. The winners in this category will receive financial support from Swarovski, as well as access to the company’s crystals for use in their own designs.

The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Michael Kors, presented by Anna Wintour who recalled a humorous anecdote about how Kors once stayed in the ocean in Jamaica for four hours because Ralph Lauren was also on the beach – and Kors didn’t want Lauren to see that he was, in fact, wearing Ralph Lauren swim trunks.

Paper magazine’s founding editor and publisher Kim Hastreiter, a longtime champion of new and undiscovered fashion talents, was given the Eugenia Sheppard Award for excellence in journalism, which actress Brooke Shields introduced, while Caroline Kennedy presented Vogue fashion director Tonne Goodman with the Eleanor Lambert Award. Isabella Rossellini introduced Iman, who received the “Fashion Icon” award.

For the second year in a row, the “Popular Vote” award went to Ralph Lauren. Through a joint Web site sponsored by L’Oreal Paris and WWD.com, anyone could vote for their favorite fashion designer.

The exhibit was the first of its kind for Vanity Fair. Guests had the opportunity to view numerous VF covers, rare photos from the archives, and video playing on plasma televisions throughout the musem featuring behind the scenes footage from famous editorial photoshoots, including one with George Clooney.  And who can forget the infamous “Moore Demi Moore” cover.

This August 1991 Vanity Fair cover with a pregnant Demi Moore is one of the most highly regarded magazine covers of all time, and it is one of photographer Annie Leibovitz's best known works. This cover was very controversial at the time with critics saying it was obscene. This cover made pregnancy photos fashionable.

This cover is on display at LACMA or, as SSD discovered, you can purchase your own for just under $30 on ebay.

The party was a hot ticket, drawing out numerous celebrities, including Mischa Barton, Joan Collins, Rosario Dawson, Illeana Douglas, Minnie Driver, Brian Grazer, George Hamilton, Mandy Moore, and Rainn Wilson.  You can see what these celebs were wearing, and our SSD review, in the gallery below.

The lovely gift bag girls. Photo credit: SSD.

At the end of the evenings, invited guests received a Burberry gift bag that included a Vanity Fair Portraits Coffee Table book.

The Los Angeles presentation, which is sponsored by Burberry, will be the only U.S. stop on the exhibition’s international tour.  The exhibit is open to the public and will go from October 26 to March.  For tickets visit www.lacma.org.
