Roger Waters Performing "The Wall"

Roger Waters is the mastermind behind Pink Floyd, selling over 200 million albums since the 70′s and near 70 years old himself, he is in incredible shape and bringing back “The Wall” tour 2010-2011. Our dear friend Leo Fenwick was kind enough to invite us to The Staple Center to see his Icon perform, and this included back stage passes with 11th row seats on the floor!

The stage "The Wall"

Waters and his 11 piece band, including his son on keyboards, performed songs we almost all know by heart like “Wish You Were Here“, “Comfortably Numb“, and “Another Brick in the Wall“.

Plane Crashing Into The Wall Stage At Staples Center

The concert began with a huge plane flying down from the ceiling and crashing into the wall which was made up of white screens and metal boxes. Each white screen had an image projected on it reflecting war from the past and present, heros lost and remaining, it was a very political but very beautiful. Every performer was dressed in all black t-shirts and black jeans or pants, it was certainly more about the music than the fashion there that night.

Children Wearing "Fear Builds Walls" T-Shirts On Stage at The Wall in Los Angeles

During one song, Waters brought out a big group of children from Compton who all wore “Fear Builds Walls” t-shirts, at the same time the children danced and sang, a huge rat like blow up doll with a teacher outfit on and a long stick came down from the ceiling – it was the entire height of the theater and had electric eyes. When we asked Leo who the art director for the concert was he found out that it was Waters himself, he envisioned and designed the entire show and all of the moving elaborate parts including laser lights, fog machines, flame throwers, projections, inflatable floating puppets – including his trade park “flying pig”, decorated with anti-war graffiti and many film shots pointing out greed about money, oil and over consumption.

Waters Performs With An Image of Himself Projected Behind Him from the 70's

Waters performed during the Live Earth, an international multi-venue concert aimed at raising awareness about global climate change, he also became a spokesman for Millennium Promise, a non-profit organisation that helps fight extreme poverty and malaria. The loss of a father is the central idea of The Wall. As the years go by, children lose their fathers again and again, for nothing, he believes. Waters if quoted saying,” You see it now with all these fathers, good men and true, who lost their lives and limbs in Iraq for no reason at all. I’ve done Bring The Boys Back Home in my encore on recent tours. It feels more relevant and poignant to be singing that song now than it did in 1979.

Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash caught the show in Los Angeles. “Roger Waters was cool,” he announced to his followers on Twitter @slash. “Very Broadway feeling but amazing video and sound.” No commit on the politics, but whatever your view’s are, this concert is one worth seeing.

Money raised will support The Abolish Slavery Coalition‘s rescue and rehabilitation of women and children forced into slavery.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing illegal business in the world, with children as the commodity.  There are more than 27 million slaves in the world today —  more than in any other time in history.

Meet Thuy Lai, a young girl living in Kampochea who at age 8 was the youngest madam The Abolish Slavery coalition has yet to encounter.  Her mixed Vietnamese and Cambodia heritage was seen as an asset to human traffickers who prey on little Vietnamese girls.   An undercover Vietnamese field agent took this picture of Thuy.

In 2007 Thuy “disappeared.”
