The most stylish 7-year-old I know, Calli, rocks bright multi-colored feathers. Photo Credit: SSD

Singer Ke$ha helped put Feather Hair Extensions on the map for trends to try in 2011.  This is a great look to experiment with because you don’t have to commit to a drastic hair cut or color.  If you don’t like the feathers in your hair, just take them out.  So I decided to give this look a try.  I went to stylist Grace Nicole at Auburn Salon in Santa Monica to find out more about this new hair accessory and to get the look.  Read on to find out the process and my outcome…

Stylist Grace Nicole used pliers to apply the hair extensions, which stay in for months. Photo credit: SSD

Although I chose a subtle color feather that matches my blonde locks, she had lots of fun colors to choose from. After seeing a few different styles on some of my friends, I decided to go with the single feather look, so I got two of them staggered about an inch from each other.

You can choose a feather that contrasts with your hair color like pink or purple, or something more subtle like tan or red. Photo credit: SSD

Another option is the bundle, which looks funky with a bunch of different colored feathers in a bunch, definitely a look that makes you stand out. Super stylish Calli, age 7, has a bundle of bright colored feathers mixed with some single strands of extensions. This look is fun and definitely contrasts well with her hair.

Using real feathers, these thin extensions are wrapped into the hair with a bead that is squeezed tight with pliers. The best part about them is that you can wash, brush, blow dry, flat iron, and curl them for any style you’re looking for. The feathers are also reusable.

Using a bead and pliers, the feathers can stay in your hair for over a month! Photo Credit: SSD

Grace Nicole has been getting lots of customers coming in for a few feathers, then coming in a second or third time to either move the extension or add more. The feathers cost about $10-$15 per strand or $35-$45 for a bundle depending on the salon, and they can stay in for over a month.

The dark red feathers make for a subtle addition to Carly's dark hair. And they look great curled. Photo Credit: SSD

The feathers, spotted on girls of all ages, can be hidden in your hair and only seen in certain angles, like Carly’s red feathers which she had placed low, under her dark locks, or they can be more visible with bright colors and bundles. Whichever way you wear it, this trend is super fun for the coming spring and summer months and gives you a new updated look if you’re in need of a change.

My finished product! Grace did a great job of making this look fabulous. Photo Credit: SSD

A true visionary, TOMS Creator Blake Mycoskie makes the world a better place with his fashion. Photo Credit: Steve Garcia

TOMS, the shoe brand known for its One for One motto, launched its new line of footwear inspired by the late social activist Dan Eldon. Both TOMS and Eldon’s stories are incredible which is why it makes sense the worlds have collided. TOMS, which is based in LA, manufactures shoes with a purpose; for each pair of shoes purchased, a pair of shoes is given to a child in need in countries in South America, Africa, and even parts of the U.S. This launch party, held at their new gallery space at Space 15 Twenty in Hollywood was an event filled with great food, celebrities, inspirational speakers, and of course, shoes.

Dan Eldon’s mother Kathy and sister Ann spoke about the inspirational life Dan lived and the way his life has impacted so many people and will continue to do so.

Dan Eldon was a social activist and photographer in the 1990′s, he was brutally stoned to death at age 23 while shooting meaningful photos in a dangerous city in Africa. This new TOMS line features shoes inspired by Africa, Dan’s photographs, and his journal that kept amazing stories about his journey.

Eldon and his family’s story is inspirational, and will soon be turned into a movie starring Julia Roberts playing Dan’s mother Kathy Eldon.

A few hours before the event, my Aunt Joanne Marien, who attended the event with me, found out her non-profit organization Good For Kids, which benefits children in Costa Rica, will now be receiving shipments of 17,000 TOMS shoes for the children. She was thrilled to talk to Blake and thank him for everything he has done to help the world’s children.

Umami, known for it’s gourmet burgers, had passed platters of several types of juicy sliders, sweet potato fries, french fries, smushed potatoes, and my favorite, cheese tots. The food was a hit and so was the Ultimate Vodka drinks and music spun by DJ Egon.
