Simon Spurr

Back in 2008 Style Seen Daily founders Crystal Fambrini and Erica Cornwall sat down with Simon Spurr to discuss his two year old menswear collection SPURR which included three styles of American made mens denim and  and his plans to launch SIMON SPURR in 2009. At the time, he had just a few employees and was really known for his previous work in house with Hedi Slimane, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, since he has proven his talent with his creation of menswear affording timeless elegance to all. Check out our exclusive with Simon here:

As if his clean and strong design was not enough for us to become fans, his warm charming personality and British mannerisms did us in.

Not only have we watched Simon show his incredible talent by design, we have fallen for who he actually is as a person which made us that much happier when he has been honored many times in the fashion industry including in 2007, DNR awarded SPURR with the ‘Editor’s Choice Award for Best New Label.’ In 08′, GQ, in conjunction with the CFDA, named Simon ‘Best New Menswear Designers in America.’ Then in 09 he received the prestigious nomination for the CFDA/VOGUE Fashion Fund Award, then again the following year he was one of the final nominees for the CFDA’s Swarovski Award for Menswear, 2010.

Tommy Fazio Joins Simon Spurr

The Spurr family is growing steadily, in 2009, another dynamic lovable addition came on board, Tommy Fazio, who was Men’s Fashion Director at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, resigned to become president of SPURR.  Tommy is the type of guy who will literally give you the scarf off his neck, ( we happen to be so lucky).  Together they have continued to expand the brand which is firmly built upon a framework that emphasizes color, proportion and deliberate subtly, while remaining sophisticated with precision in tailoring that finds its roots in the heart of Savile Row.  All of the brands pieces are individually designed and manufactured in Italy, France and the US using the finest fabrics in the world.  Simon’s designs have won the hearts of men across the globe, including celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Bradley Cooper, his jackets, suits and bags have become a mainstay in men’s wardrobes year round.

Simon Spurr Runway

With Tommy on board, they debuted SPURR and SIMON SPURR’s first runway show during New York Fall ’10 Fashion Week.  Highlights of the show are all over the internet and in the pages of magazines gloabally including Details, GQ, WWD and Vogue. Both brands are sold worldwide including Bergdorf Goodman, Jeffrey New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, Luisa Via Roma, The Webster, Confederacy, Harrods, Bloomingdales, Scoop and Nordstrom.

SIMON SPURR exudes Modern British elegance, we have been wearing his shirts, scarves and carrying his bags – all men’s of course – so we were thrilled to have learned that the next step for the brands, we can have our own woman’s wear because they told us they will be ramping up for the launch of a women’s ready to wear collection, sure to become a favorite worldwide. We can’t wait Simon!

It has been reported that after 11 years at Vogue, senior accessories editor Filipa Fino parted ways with the magazine. Although no details were given as to the reason for her departure, a spokeswoman revealed that she is no longer with the company. When asked for a possible replacement, Condé Nast declined to elaborate with any further statements.

With such a strong voice departing from the pages of Vogue, the direction of one of, if not the most important American fashion publications is subject to change dramatically depending on who is chosen to replace Fino. For more than a decade, under the watchful eye of Anna Wintour, Filipa Fino was able to orchestrate the cohesion of accessories with the trends and zeitgeist of the times. She understood how to deliver what the american market was waiting for, whether it was the ‘it bag’ of the season, or the next must have shoe,  Fino never failed to impress with her chic sensibilities that the editorial pages of Vogue required.  recreating her vision may be the direction the publication will opt for, hiring someone with similar understanding and views of fashion. With the opportunity for such a coveted position now open, the reality of the situation is that it can go any which way and the direction that accessories are presented to us will ultimately be altered in the very near future.

Speculations are circulating around the industry  that Finos departure may have been tied to ‘inappropriate behavior on her part’ possibly with unprofessional use of company expenses and the elusive Vogue fashion closet. WWD posted an article claiming close sources within Condé Nast hinted this to be the case, but quickly after the article was mysteriously  revised excluding that statement. Of course, Vogue and WWD are both part of Condé Nast group, which could mean that the reason for her departure is being carefully guarded for the time being.

Trying to imagine Filipa Fino taking advantage of something like the Sample Closet at Vogue, which she has had free reign to, over the past 11 years, is suspicious in itself, but when tied together with the fact that the rumor mill is being fueled from within the Condé Nast group, one can assume that they are not factually driven.  Maybe Finos exit was part of a preconceived plan to venture out on her own and that left a few taking shots at a great talent, who decided to move onto a better career choice.

On June 21st, 4 days after leaving Vogue, Fino took to her twitter, writing, “Can’t believe attn I’m getting! lol After 11 years I’m flying solo. So excited abt new co FFConsulting. Stay tuned. More to come.” This gives little insight to her future plans.

Whether or not the decision to leave Vogue was hers or theirs, there is no doubt that the success she found within those pages will resonate with the women who grew accustomed to her aesthetics throughout the years and will surely guarantee the same success in whatever her next endeavor may be. Fingers crossed that Vogue finds the same luck when choosing Filipa Finos successor, because she left a big pair of glamorous heals to fill.

Jack & Karen in Vogue by AL

We believe its all about creating your own style and as long as your not harming anyone else, then live your life as you wish. That being said, we were really impressed to find out that one of the most independently stylish rockers Jack White and his fashion model wife Karen Elson were not only divorcing, but throwing a “divorce party”.

Official Invite of Karen & Jack's Divorce

After over six years together, and several hundred fashionable apperances, the couple announced the split and sent invites out to their closest friends, just last Friday, along with their two children Henry Lee and Scarlett.  The event was private, but guests celebrated per their hosts requests with dancing, drinking and food.  Similar to a birthday party, or retirement celebration, the couple showcased memorable photos of their years together. Right before the couple married they did a shoot together with the infamous Annie Leibowitz, documented by Vogue. The two have always been unique and had a very artistic style between them, both alone and together. Jack White’s representative released an official statement from Karen and Jack saying;  “We remain dear and trusted friends and co-parents to our wonderful children Scarlett and Henry Lee. We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow. In honor of that time shared, we are throwing a divorce party, an evening together in Nashville to re-affirm our friendship and celebrate the past and future with close friends and family.”

In honor of their memory, check out White Stripes video Blue Orchid, which was released just before the couple married some six years ago.

Congrats to the couple who are setting an example of peace, love and honor for their children, friends and fans!

RODEO DRIVE FASHION’S NIGHT OUT SEPTEMBER 10, 2010 6:00 – 10:00 PM

Last year’s first installment of Fashion’s Night Out, an effort to jump-start a sagging industry with an evening full of shopping events in major cities all over the world that was brought to us by New York-based Vogue magazine and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, was, not surprisingly, very Manhattan-centric. Southern California was barely represented, with a few local scattered efforts staged at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills and the Fred Segal Center on Melrose Avenue.

What a difference a year makes. For the sophomore effort on Friday, Sept. 10, Southern California is fielding a slate of highly organized, “Vogue-sanctioned” events, stretching from Newport Beach to Pasadena, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Office of Economic and Business Policy is rallying retailers.

Following are highlights of planned Fashion’s Night Out activities in three cities — Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and West Hollywood — within whose borders some 300 assorted and sundry parties, personal appearances, shopping discounts and the like will occur simultaneously.

Beverly Hills

Sixty-seven retailers have signed up to mark FNO in the 90210, which will have a decidedly circus-like atmosphere — thanks to a four-story-tall Ferris wheel set up in the 200 block of North Rodeo Drive. (Rides are free — if you have a proof-of-purchase receipt from one of the evening’s participating stores.)

Among the events scheduled for the evening: at Giorgio Armani, actor Samuel L. Jackson will host an exhibition of his favorite red carpet looks over the years, displayed on mannequins and accompanied by a question-and-answer session with fashion critic Steven Cojocaru from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (reservations, which can be made at [212] 209-4102, are recommended), Chanel will be offering free manicures with its new collection of polishes, and the Lacoste boutique will be the site of a Wii tennis tournament.

There will be no shortage of parties. Valentino, for example, is having a casino night. DJs Super Mash Bros. will be spinning at Emporio Armani, while DJ Rick Khan has been tapped for Roberto Cavalli‘s bash. Geary’s will host a “gentleman’s lounge” with Scotch, beer, hors d’oeuvres and some heavy-duty models — of Rolex and Patek Phillipe timepieces, that is.

At 6 p.m., a life-size celebrity version of the fashion trivia board game Fashion Rules will begin at the foot of the Ferris wheel on Rodeo, and is set to include singer/actress Kelly Osbourne, “Dancing With the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba, stylist George Kotsiopoulos and Vogue’s West Coast editor Lisa Love.

Tod’s is selling a limited-edition handbag for the event, Salvatore Ferragamo is celebrating its first collection from new Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti with the launch of his W-bag purse Mikimoto will be featuring pearl-stringing demonstrations and Coach will have artists on hand to customize merchandise.

Organizers also have made sure that Rodeo Drive revelers will be able to fill their stomachs as easily as they empty their wallets, promising the famed thoroughfare will be lined with gourmet food trucks serving a variety of fare including kimchi-topped French fries and architecturally themed ice cream sandwiches.

Beverly Hills’ Fashion’s Night Out, centered on Rodeo Drive, runs 6 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 10. Additional information and updates are available at the Rodeo Drive Committee’s website: http://www.rodeodrive-bh.com/fashionsnightout.html.

Los Angeles

The beige box that dominates the intersection of La Cienega and Beverly boulevards is shaping up to dominate this year’s local FNO efforts — and not just for the benefit of its own tenants.

In partnership with the mayor’s office, the Beverly Center will function as the hub, headquarters and starting point for the city’s FNO events, with free parking (starting at 4 p.m.) and no-cost busses to ferry shoppers to six retail districts centered on Melrose Avenue, Robertson Boulevard, West 3rd Street, Abbot Kinney Boulevard, downtown Los Angeles and Los Feliz.

As befits Hollywood, the night of extended shopping will kick off with red carpet arrivals at the Beverly Center at 4 p.m., as VIPs, celebrities and invitees turning out to hear remarks from the mayor, who is slated to speak at a 5 p.m. news conference alongside Vogue’s Lisa Love, L.A.-based designer Randolph Duke, skateboarder/reality TV star Rob Dyrdek and Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am.

The Beverly Center has promised the first 100 shoppers a free Fashion’s Night Out Los Angeles T-shirt — designed by FIDM student Marc Blaskovits. (The shirt will be sold at the mall and other participating spots around Los Angeles — including Fred Segal on Melrose, The Grove and Intermix and Udrest, which are both on Robertson, among others — for $15 each. Poceeds will help fund scholarships for fashion students.)

A fashion show of fall looks featuring some of the Beverly Center’s retailers (including Forever 21, Bebe, Ben Sherman and Traffic, among others) will be staged in the mall’s sixth-floor central area at 5:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. In between, Macy’s is scheduled to host a “Denim Rocks” runway show, highlighting local denim brands, at 6:30 p.m.

In addition Charles David founder Charles Malka is scheduled to do an in-store shoe signing (in the Beverly Center) from 6 to 9 p.m. William Rast co-founders Tracy Ayala and Justin Timberlake will be hosting a sneak peek at their label’s new footwear collection and a special FNO eyewear collectionat the William Rast flagship store at Westfield Century City from 8 to 9 p.m. (Earlier the pair will do the same at the Nordstrom at Santa Monica Place from 6 to 7 p.m.)

Throughout the night, the Fred Segal Center on Melrose promises appearances by Quiksilver‘s surfing team, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh (who will sign copies of his book “Beautiful Mutants“) and the guys behind Spirit Hoods, who will be on hand to make sure that any of their animal-shaped hats that are purchased are worn jauntily askew.Taylor Jacobson (formerly with “The Rachel Zoe Project“) will be on hand to offer styling tips from 8 to 10 p.m.

Decadestwo and HauteLook are kicking off a three-day “400 dresses for $400″ event — with a cocktail party featuring special guest designer Alexis Phifer. 6 to 9 p.m.

There’s also some added incentive to pry open the wallet within city limits on Friday night: Anyone (21 and older) who can brandish receipts totaling $25 from a participating Los Angeles FNO retailer will have entrée into a post-shopping fete at SBE’s Industry nightclub, on La Cienega Boulevard,, which will include fashion presentations by some of the designers who call the city home, including Kevan Hall, Sue Wong, Louis Verdad and Petro Zillia’s Nony Tochterman. A second party, at SBE’s XIV, on Sunset Boulevard, subject to the same entrance requirements, will feature fashion-themed drinks. Both bashes will run from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Los Angeles’ Fashion’s Night Out festivities are scheduled to run 6 to 10 p.m., with free parking at — and shuttle service from — the Beverly Center for the duration. A full list of participating retailers as well as a printable map, can be found at city’s FNO site: http://www.fno.lacity.org.

West Hollywood

FNO WeHo is a little city going big: The 1.9-square-mile community of West Hollywood had lined up 28 participants, including Chrome Hearts, Vera Wang, Nicole Miller and the Sunset Plaza shopping center, for events, appearances and parties.

A Julia Clancey runway show is slated for the Andaz West Hollywood’s RH bar, James Jean artwork will be on display at the 3.1 Phillip Lim boutique, and, in what will no doubt be one of the evening’s popular spectator sports events, the Andrew Christian underwear boutique will be holding a Twister competition from 8 to 10 p.m. featuring models wearing nothing more than their skivvies.

For shoppers — and aspiring rock gods — who don’t mind dropping $300 at the John Varvatos boutique on Robertson, celebrity rock photographer Robert Knight will be on hand to shoot your portrait.

The Sunset Plaza shopping center is planning a party complete with aural ambience courtesy of live DJs and a runway show of fall fashion from the center’s retailers. (The price of admission is an FNO proof of purchase.)

West Hollywood’s Fashion’s Night Out runs from 6 to 10 p.m., with free shuttle service for the duration. Shuttle information and a full list of participating retailers and events are available at the organizers’ website:http://www.avenueswh.com/events/fno.

Anna Wintour And Marc Jacobs Stay Up Late For Jimmy

Designer Marc Jacobs and Vogue Editor In Chief Anna Wintour with Late Night Host Jimmy Fallon.

Jimmy Fallon is a nervous fellow by nature, but he shirked that college humor to the side a smidge to welcome fashion legends designer Marc Jacobs and Vogue E-I-C Anna Wintour to his stage this week so the two can plug her upcoming Fashion’s Night Out coming up September 10.

Anna was light on the glaring and kept the topic on point, even interrupting Marc Jacobs’ subway story, and looked amazing in Carolina Herrera and her signature bob a-swaying while MJ rocked a kilt.

And while Jimmy gushed about the first lady of fashion’s annual Met Gala where Lady Gaga performed this year, the Wintour wasn’t exactly gaga over the pop princess’ time management by daring to keep Anna waiting while LG chatted with a higher power. “We had Lady Gaga this year,” said Wintour. “There was a moment when she was communing with God and she was praying in the back, waiting for God to tell her it was all right to go actually onstage.”

With a roll of an eye and bat of a eye, Wintour quipped, “Fortunately he gave her the message after 45 minutes,” she quipped.

July 2010

Boom time for haute couture as overseas demand soars.

Couture is back: Rumours of its death had been exaggerated. Designers including Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Givenchy reporting a rise in sales of their custom-made creations ahead of this week’s Paris shows.

The increase in sales of exclusive fashions – often costing upwards of £30,000 a dress – is being credited to new clients in Russia, the Middle East and China, as well as the return of US customers who had reined in their spending during the recession.

Chanel estimates sales of the label’s summer collection were up 20 to 30 per cent on 2009, while Givenchy said its January couture sales were up 10 per cent on last year. Jean Paul Gaultier’s president, Veronique Gautier, described the situation as a “spectacular recovery”. The company reported that its Russian client base began growing after it held its first haute couture show in Moscow in May. Dior, meanwhile, showed couture at the opening of its enlarged boutique in Shanghai in May.

“It is difficult to pinpoint where couture customers come from,” said Harriet Quick of Vogue. “The people you see in the front rows at Paris aren’t the same people who are going to the salon to buy them. They are discreet.”

Sidney Toledano, president of Christian Dior, told the US fashion blog Women’s Wear Daily that Dior’s couture arm is booming globally. He said: “We have received so many orders, we are not sure we can deliver them.”

Designers, buyers and fashion editors flocked to Paris this weekend for the city’s couture shows, which open tomorrow. Labels such as Dior, Valentino and Giorgio Armani Privé will stage catwalk shows, while Givenchy has decided to show its designs by appointment only this season.

“It has gone from a beleaguered couture week to a buoyant commercial proposition,” Ms Quick said.

Stringent rules, policed by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, that governed the exclusive world of Paris fashion for 150 years are being relaxed. Once, to use the term “haute couture” fashion houses had to have a workshop in Paris, present a certain number of outfits twice a year and design made-to-measure clothes for individual clients. While purchasing a couture gown from a traditional house such as Chanel requires plenty of both time and money – involving at least three trips to the workshop for fittings – some new designers are happy to work remotely, having the dress sent to and from clients by courier.

“Alexis Mabille does a mix of ready to wear and couture, and the prices are much lower. There is also a new designer, Lee Klabin, who is in Paris showing,” Ms Quick said.

Mabille and Klabin are not the only newcomers to Paris fashion week. Jewellery brands such as Van Cleef & Arpels and Chanel Joaillerie showcased their expensive wares as part of the official haute couture calendar for the first time in February. And the last day of the couture shows is now entirely devoted to jewellery. Since allowing jewellers entrance into the couture week, the Chambre Syndicale is said to have been inundated with requests to open up the shows to other brands.
